  • Shani Rhys James

    Shani Rhys James

Interviewed in her studio among her paintings for the exhibition 'The Black Cot', Shani Rhys James talks openly and in detail about the influences that contribute to her work and way of working. Sometimes unnerving and always engaging Shani's figures stare out of the paintings, following the viewer around the studio.

The film also shows Shani at work, applying paint with an urgent immediacy to large canvasses using brushes, knives and gloved hand. This direct and sensual approach to painting is revealed, as paintings for the exhibition take on their form and Shani's striking works emerge.

Shani Rhys James has received many awards for her painting including the coveted Jerwood Prize for Painting. She has work in many permanent public collections and she is collected by a number of influential private art collectors.
